Research Services Specialist demonstrates knowledge level in assigned area and works under direction only as needed. Serves as a liaison between investment professionals and external research providers to obtain the most cost-effective and optimal research solution to meet business needs. Manages ongoing relationships with key strategic providers and may participate in or manage the negotiations and process for on-boarding new research provider services. Provides support and coordination across various areas of the Research Relationship Management team’s work, including guidance on operational and workflow issues, technical questions, business processes, and resolutions. Serves as a subject matter expert for outside research services, both internally and externally.


Primary responsibilities/essential functions:

• Serves as a primary contact for Capital Group’s external research needs.

o Communicates with Capital Group investment professionals to understand their business needs and the use of external research and research services, including broker-dealer and independent research, and expert networks. Ensures investment professionals and teams are aware of current external research services which have been inventoried, classified, and cataloged, recommending current services or suggesting changes as appropriate.

o Responds to requests for information about external research and services from investment professionals and other business areas (e.g., answers questions, resolves issues, enhances processes, and shares knowledge).

o Acts as first point of contact for inquiries on rate cards, entitlements, research provider contacts, fixed price research, expert networks, MiFID II compliance, and other research topics as needed.

o Responsible for on-boarding all new research providers, taking into account what services are already on-boarded. Minimizes duplicative services.

o Responsible for awareness of best in class research providers, and making suggestions to investment professionals where necessary.

o Keeps users and support teams informed of product changes, enhancements, and service issues.

o Liaises with investment professionals to collect feedback on the quality and usability of research and services. Ensures feedback is appropriately documented and communicated to providers.

o Prepares and distributes status reports, presentations, and other updates to management as appropriate.

o Participates in projects assisting with vendor identification, analysis, and selection.

o Represents the interests of investment professionals when new or upgraded product versions are deployed.  

o May liaise with Market Data Administrative team to ensure inventory is accurately captured and distinguished between investment group users and non-investment group users.

• Maintains and updates one or more databases/systems with information from a variety of internal and external sources.

o Ensures that data is accurate, purposeful, and adds value. Extracts data to generate reports as needed.

o Conducts data analyses and presents findings to others.

• Schedules and leads ongoing training sessions related to the team’s responsibilities, research budgets, MiFID II compliance, and databases/systems as needed. o Coordinates attendance, venues, and logistics.

o Creates training materials and tip sheets.

o Provides ongoing training support to internal associates using databases/systems.

• Manages on-boarding and billing/invoicing for external research services and expert networks. o Obtains appropriate approvals for expenditures relating to research services.

o Responds to questions or requests related to invoices.

• May negotiate complex vendor agreements and manage key vendor relationships and systems. o Compiles and analyzes research service usage and inventory to identify opportunities for efficiencies and cost savings.

o Prepares and delivers research evaluation scorecards to research providers.

o Facilitates discussions and records decisions/action items.

o Reviews vendor contracts for accuracy of business and usage terms. Works closely with Legal to ensure Capital Group’s interests are protected, and all research procured meets regulatory requirements.

o Coordinates finalization of contracts and other legal documents for execution, ensuring all processes are followed and stakeholders and information databases are updated.

o Learns and operates various systems required to access and maintain research services.

• Works on special projects as assigned.

• Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.


• Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of the securities industry, the investment cycle, evolving regulatory trends, the securities/mutual fund industry (terminology, procedures, and regulations) and ability to apply knowledge to work assignments.

• Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of external research services and providers, as well as service licensing concepts and practices.

• Demonstrates experience managing and executing negotiation strategies with external research providers.

• Demonstrates ability to collaborate and work effectively as a part of a team as well as with their assigned business unit in order to develop a strong knowledge of their function and work process. Demonstrates ability to apply this knowledge to work assignments.

• Demonstrates knowledge of contractual concepts and principles and the ability to apply knowledge to work assignments.
